My Name is Caroline is one of the first books written by a survivor of an eating disorder that addresses how to free your life of food and weight obsessions.

One of the reasons I love this site is because it will really help people learn to accept themselves and their addictions with love and forgiveness, and to hopefully move past the perceived stigma of having an eating disorder or other addiction.

When “My Name is Caroline” was published in 1988, it was one of the first autobiographical books about recovery from bulimia, and it disclosed my life in detail.  I wanted people to understand the inside workings of a typical bulimic’s day, and also wanted people to know that we didn’t wake up every day and willfully ruin our health because we were selfish, entitled, over privileged women who couldn’t say “no” to ourselves.

The book did better than expected, and it continues to sell well today.  As a result, I have even less privacy than I ever thought possible, but I accept this because I want people to see that I can have a high public profile as a professional coach in the field of happiness and goal setting, and still have no problems with disclosing my past.  In fact, I was recently asked in an interview what my “Power Moment” was in my life – the moment when I knew I was a powerful woman.  Without any hesitation, I said that I was exceptionally proud of my recovery from bulimia, and that it had defined me in every way, and given me the courage and happiness to be the person I am today.

I wish every recovered bulimic would talk openly and honestly about where they’ve come from, because I think more people would seek help and have a huge world of long-term recovered role models to make the path easier.
