We often say the Lord's Prayer at the end of meetings.  What does it mean?

AA and The Lord’s Prayer

By Chuck

Our Father in Heaven,

Who is this Father in Heaven?  This is the Father who created the Heavens and the Earth and everything in it.  He created a paradise of plenty and placed it in our custody.  This is the power greater than us.

Hallowed be your name,

His name is exalted.  He is the one with all.  This is why we practice the third step and turn it over, because he is greater than we are.

Your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.

It is a fact that what is to come, beyond our custody, will be God’s will.  His will, will be done.  It is not a request.  It is not a command.  It is a statement of fact.  It is true here as well as everywhere.  God created the heavens and the earth, completely.

Give us our daily bread.

This is a common prayer.  This is, “one day at a time.”

Forgive us our debts as we have forgiven our debtors.

“Live and let live.”  It is a statement of fact.  Again, it is not a command, but a statement of fact.  We will be forgiven as we forgive.  This may be on a spiritual plane we don’t see right now.  Faith is to know that it is true.  But, to those of us who have experienced our obsession lifted , faith is bolstered by experience.

Lead us not into temptation , but deliver us from the evil one.

This is surrender.  In the parlance of Christianity, it is repentance.  We recognize our powerlessness, that on our own we will give in to that which is harmful and have power over us, and we are trusting in him, the same father that created the Heavens and Earth, to take temptation from us.
